ALERT
Lafayette residents be aware that at the last Lafayette Parish School Board meeting on Feb. 6th, "Common Core" was introduced & played up. It will be discussed further at the Feb 20th meeting. It is crucial that people show up. At one point the school board had more power with their vote, these days the only thing they can vote on is hiring of the superintendent, budget and local policy. The push for common core is coming from the state superintendent White & local superintendent Cooper. Lafayette's Superintendent Pat Cooper is proposing 560 million in new taxes on a November ballot.
Info on common core:
"In the most basic sense, common core national standards removes the running of education from the state into the hands of the federal government. Where as in the past districts were run locally and by the state, the federal government would have more power with national standards. This is related to the information taught as well as funding. Local municipalities are facing the fact that they may not hold control over how their school is run as well as seen and will make the choice to accept what the national government is planning, determine what is being taught or they risk losing funding. The loss of teacher creativity is also discussed as a drawback of national standards, it takes away from the teacher’s chance to use their own experience and creativity."
Did the Governor obligate Louisiana to adopt Common Core when they tied into "Race to the Top"?
Common core, what ? Two Mom's Against Common Core
